Sturnus vulgaris
2.
Feb. 13 Point Reyes 'peninsula', Marin Co., Calif (cont.)
that we might get a specimen that way.
There seems to be a general agreement
among the property owners here to
keep all hunters off the land, ?we could
not make them see the difference between
collection of a scientific specimen &
general hunting.
On the low 'pass' opposite the school,
still further toward the point another
flock of 10-15 birds were seen, at least
4 (probably all) of which were Starlings,
as they were seen well on the ground.
Then at the Mendoza Ranch, still further
toward the point, at least 7 other
Starlings were seen at the closest range
yet. These were mixed in a flock
of Euphagus cyanocphalus, agelains
phoeniceus & Sturnella neglecta which
were feeding among the cows on hillsides
near a watering trough, feeding area.
Yellowish spots on the plumage of one
bird, and a yellowish tinge to the bill
were noted as it perched momentarily
on a bush not over 100 feet from us.
All these Starlings seem very wary and
will not allow any close approach on
foot; but we expect numbers to arrive in next
few years & make conditions somewhat different.
