Apr. 10 Jawbone Ranger Station, near Jawbone Creek, alt. 3500',
Stanislaus Nat'l Forest, Tuolumne Co., Calif. (cont'd p.3)
0519 - "chip-chyeeep" calls heard from up on
ridge above. (species ??).
0520 - Purple Finch - sang.
0522 - Black Phoebe - "song" - steadily, from near cabin
0523 - Brewer's Blackbird - " " - " " "
by 0530 (I was dressing) - Warbling Vireo - in song.
- Flicker - song, in distance.
From 0530 - 0630 I hiked over to the creek,
noting a Dipper (Cinclus mexicanus), call note -
but didn't catch sight of the bird; and thence thru
yellow Pine - white fir forest to more open yellow-
Pine - manzanita & Ceanothus cuneatus growth on ridge to
west of the creek. In more exposed, S.E. facing
slopes the chaparral is high & thick; on the pro-
tected slopes only Chamaefirea and occasional
smaller Arctostaphylos bushes cover the ground
(Q. kelloggii)
under the pines. Black oaks there are not yet
beginning to leaf out, although some are
well out in lower canyons we came through
yesterday. Some scrubby Q. chrysolepis here too.
Birds & mammals recorded during this hour are:
Red-shafted Flicker - 1 Bush tit - 2 (squeak)
acorn woodpecker - 2 White Br. Nuthatch - 1 heard singing
Hairy Woodpecker - 1 Bewick's Wren - 1 "
Steller's Jay - 4 Robin - flock of 5, flew over.
Scrub Jay - 1 * Varied Thrush - 17 came to squeak
