Logswell 1948 Buteo jamaicensis Oct. 16 2 mi. S. of Napa, Napa Co., Calif. 3 flew over highway (route 29) together and soon began a series of swoops and dives, sometimes coming to below fence-post level over pasturalland nearby. Apparently one of the birds was an interloper and at least one of the others was doing its best to drive it off. Oct. 24 - San Pablo Reservoir, Contra Costa Co., Calif. 3 gathered from high over the ridge to the NE. of the lake to dive on an immature golden eagle which was soaring at a con- siderably lower altitude. They made at least a dozen rushes at it, but each time the eagle would deviate slightly from its steady glide, throw up its wings, and the red-tail would swoop at the same time. Pinole Valley vicinity Contra Costa Co., Calif. More red-tails over adjacent hills and fields than I have ever seen in such a limited space, I believe. They soared in 2's to 5's, high & low, and several were seen perched low on fence posts, or power-line towers, and in trees (one in shade tree in barnyard). Both adults and immatures noted among those seen close up. Estimated total of 18 birds seen.
