Cogswell 1949 Journal 25 Mar. 20 p.4 Sartain Ranch, N.E. Colusa Co., Calif. From about 12:15 to 1:30 PM we stopped along the Bradley - Colusa Rd. at the E. boundary of Sartain's 6900+ acres (just W. of Butte Creek) and sat on bank while we learned about the pheasant management & study program here. The Sartain ranch is mostly rice stubble yet, but ~~the smaller farm to the east {between here & Butte Creek} is green with ?? a plant I didn't identify. Three Buteo swain- soni flew over together, headed ~ SSW. They ranged from a very dark bellied & breasted bird (with whole wing linings quite dark, tho anterior 1/3 was more reddish brown than deep brown as rest of wing), to a bird in intermediate phase with light area of wing linings more prominent & breast lighter, & the 3rd bird in typical light phase. - Conway Ranch, SE. of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif. From about 5:15 to 6:15 PM we engaged in another pheasant drive here, the section we worked being along a roadside irrigation ditch -- 1+ mile of which yielded only 10 & 34 birds. Just at dusk we drove over to levee along W. side of Yolo Basin & discovered where all the pheasants are: they are out on newly green fields feeding & have [feels people on ranch] left stubble ditches only in last two weeks.
