Chondestes strigatus
2.
may 7. San Joaquin Experimental Range, 1000' alt., Madrone Co.,
Calif. at 5:40 AM as I was walking along the
road by headquarters here (just before sunrise
at this particular spot) a ♂ flew down and
alighted on top wire of fence followed immedi-
ately by ♀ who alighted atop her! mounting
thus was direct without previous perch elsewhere.
The ♂ sang a soft warbled phrase of 4 or 5
notes during the 2-3 second period following
his arrival, as he fluttered his wings. Then
he flew to a brace wire of the fence for about
10-12 seconds, was silent there, and then returned
and alighted next to the ♀ but immediately
fluttered up and mounted her again. The
soft warble, fluttering, and duration same as
before. ♀'s tail to left, ♂'s tail down and
slightly spread. Copulation, I assume was
successful on this or both instances. ♂ uttered
no note that I could discern 75 ft. away. Both
birds dropped to bare area in grass near patch
of amswckia and commenced foraging.
(Bruce Brown observed what was probably
the same pair in similar activity about
1 1/2 hours later).
