Dec. 26 summit of Mt. Wilson, alt. 5700-5750', San Gabriel Mts., Los Angeles Co., Califs. Together with Dr. Robt. L. Taylor of Flintridge and Ralph Mall & Arnold Small of Los Angeles I arrived here at 6:40 A.M. (C.D.S.T.), about an hour before daylight. We covered all strategic points of the summit area listening for owls, but heard none. Wind blowing up to 30 m.p.h. or so in gusts made effective listening difficult. Just before dawn the wind died down to nearly 0 (at times) - but still no owls.
There was about 1 ft. of snow in all protected places; minimum temp last night (as recorded on max.,-min. temp at observatory) was 26°F.
Starting a re-coverage of the area as soon as it was light we tallied the following birds as our share of the Pasadena Christmas Bird Count:
Red-shafted Slicker - 1
Acorn Woodpecker - 7
Red-breasted Sapsucker - 1
Nuttall's Woodpecker - 1
Steller's Jay - 19
Scrub Jay - 5
Mountain Chickadee - 16
Plain Titmouse - 2
Brown Creeper - 1
White-breasted Nuthatch - 4
*Wren, tit - 2
(8, 9 heard singing at dawn)
Bewick's Wren 1
*Varied Thrush - 1
Townsend Solitaire?) 1?
Cassin's Finch - 13
