Oct. 10 (cont.) We returned from San Mateo Co. Coast via
Crystal Springs Reservoir and San Mateo Bridge.
Many thousands of shorebirds on dike ponds
near east of bridge not estimated, but it
looked like the biggest concentration I have
yet seen in the whole bay region. Marbled
Godwits in one flock of nearly 1000.
Oct. 11 - University of Calif. (only - near West Gate) Berkeley.
Dull cloudy day. Rained last night
and few sprinkles today. Birds notably
silent, except:
Orange-crowned warbler (??) - heard calling
Robin - occasional calls
Red-shafted flicker - 1 loud call (mid. P.M.)
Brown Towhee - I chased another in cedars
just S. of West Gate in what was apparently
a territorial infringement. The victor
gave the "skittering" call afterward as it
foraged on lawn alone.
Oct. 15 - I walked through eucalyptus groves.
heard for first time this fall a:
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (see species acct.)
During lunch time I sat in my car along West
Gate "circle" street and watched foraging actions
of a Brown Towhee (see species acct.)
4:30 - 5:00 P.M. - I drove around the N. two-thirds
of Berkeley Aquatic Park, its list of water
birds seen being recorded in my roll book.
Nothing spectacular.
