a 4 49 seen on this park pond with bits of tule
border a good tule a willow island. The 3?s
were in brilliant plumage with bills practically
luminescent they were so blue. One ? was
seen rushing at a ? with her wings somewhat
outspread. At her approach he would dive a
reappear 15 - 20 feet away, whereupon she re-
peated the manuevers (which seemed to be amorous
rather than antagonistic). The first time we
saw this the ? went thru the typical courtin
display with head bobbing a bill dipping
into the water when he surfaced — but this
was not repeated when she chased him under,
th succeeding 6 or 7 times, after which he swam
away a the affair ended. However, their actions
attracted 6 other males from all directions
around that arm (N.arm) of the pond. They swam
rapidly in toward the ? ; but none approached
her closer than 15 ft. or no nuptials display on their part.
[No young here, the mallards had plenty out]
