Aguila chrysaetos
3
Dec. 11 - 4 mi. SE Mustang, Merced Co., Calif. (cont'd)
ponds & fields along E. border of the Mustang
land & cattle Co. lands (Club 14) here. It
finally put down its feet, showing
very long feathers hanging from its
legs (below the "heel"?) and alighted on
the ground across a large pond from us.
When we got out of the car it took off
again, showing light color (white?? or
golden?) about the head and much
whitish irregularly distributed over the
whole underwing surface, especially
noticeable on the underwing coverts.
This last character is so "Bald Eagle"
like that I thought it likely
was that species. However, Dr. Miller,
called attention to the long leg feathers,
expressing the idea that the Bald Eagle
would not show such long ones.
The light color at the head was not
seen under light conditions good enough
to determine it for sure. There was
no obvious white at the base of the
tail nor in the base of the primaries,
such as a young Golden would show.
[Specimens checked in MVZ — Golew
have much more length on leg coverts,
but Bald still shows some feathers
below the heel. Underwing coverts not
properly visible in most dried skins,
but some Goldens apparently are much
paler than others there. Immature Balgs
tend to be paler & more smottled above
than this bird was].
