Cogswell 1948 Journal 13 Nov.21 - Lakeport to Upper Lake, Lake Co. Calif. while riding with Richard Taber in Calif. fish. Same car we noted only such birds as were conspicuous along the road. Seen on the lake at points where shore was close by were: White Pelican - 1 Western Grebe - 2+ Duck sp? - xoo Coot - 200 Belted Kingfisher - 1 Great Blue Heron - 2 In oak grassland areas along road several Mourning Doves, Western Meadowlarks, and lots of Sparrows were seen. - Upper Lake Ranger Station, Lake Co. Calif. 07:45 - 08:30 - I walked around the area just S. & W. of Ranger Sta., covering weedy road. sides, fields, brush piles, stream banks with tall willows, a few laurel (U.californica) & Quercus lobata. There was a heavy white frost on ground. List of birds recorded is Tabulated below: (p.15-17) - Lakeport to just W Kelseyville, Lake Co. Calif. most notable birds seen enroute thru this area of pear orchards were robins by the thousands and 1+ white-tailed kite * (see respective species accounts)
