May 8 S.W side of Bass Lake, 3500' alt., madena Co., Calif. The
Ecology class, with Dr. J.A. Ritella, instructor, camped here
last night after driving from the Experimental Range in
late PM. The area about our camp is a thin 2nd growth
forest of Pinus ponderosa, Libocedrus decurrens with
and many small
some large Quercus kelloggii and a few Quercus
chrysolepis along the canyon which drains to NE into
the lake. The interstices of the forest are more or
less filled with Ceanothus integerrimus and aristo.
staphylos mariposa on the N. facing slopes, and with
scattered shrubs of these, bush types of Lupine &
various herbs on the S. facing slopes. A few Alnus
rhombifolia & 1+ Fraxinus sp. trees were found along
the stream. In the evening (May 7) I noted only
those birds in camp; but between 0430 to 0515 this AM
I tallied those heard from where I was (in sleeping bag)
0430 - I awoke; 2 black headed grosbeaks & 1 spotted
towhee in song.
0430½ - mountain quail gave "quork" call.
0433 - robin called [no songs heard all AM].
0435 - Nashville warbler sang, upslope from me.
0438 - flicker gave half hearted song; spotted towhee
which had been singing at regular intervals,
changed type of song to a more rapid "buzz".
0440 - junco sang
0443½ - Calif. quail "chi-ca-go" call heard from
down slope toward the lake. [repeated c.
5-6 times]
0447 - woodpecker drumming [not repeated]
