Coggswell 1949 Journal 29 Apr. 10 Long Jawbone Cr. Jawbone Ranger Sta., 3700' alt., Stanislaus Nat. Forest, Twisslunne Cr., Calif. (contd.) from 5:30-6:30 I hiked over to the creek thence up along the ridge road (jeep road) to point about 1 mile from cabin. Yellow pine, incense cedar, black oak, with carpet of 'mountain misery' formed about 50%? of the vegetation on E facing protected slopes, with the rest being filled with Ceanothus cuneatus Arctostaphylos (glandulosa?) on the higher exposed S facing slope this chaparral was nearly solid, with some Quercus chrysolepis or Q. douglasii. a few tall, burned stubs indicate former coniferous forest however. Birds + mammals seen or heard here are: (1) - those talled by voice at dawn: time 0500 - I awoke; Robin giving mellow trill call. 0501 - Robin gave loud 'peek' call. These two types of calls given in alternate series for a few minutes. 0503 - Spotted Towhee - 1 cat-call 0504 - Mountain Quail - 1 'quork' heard, far away. 0509 - Spotted Towhee - resumed cat-calls & continued steadily. 0512 - Robins - mostly silent now. 0513 - Sparrow sp? - 'tsup' heard. 0514 - Brown Towhee - sharp 'chip' close by. 0516 - first bird seen; a small finch or ?? flew over among the tree tops.
