1948 Yavia arctica Dec.18 Tomales Bay, Marin Co. Calif.: a good portion, perhaps half or more, of the very large population of loons here today [see Y. stellata for comment on numbers] was undoubtedly of this species. Several were seen close enough to see straight slender bill (cf. Y. immer). One came up from a dive not over 30 feet from our boat (the being rowed) near Hog Isl. It looked at us for several seconds with its head first one way then the other before proceeding to dive again and swim away from us. 1949 June29 Monterey, Monterey Co. Calif.: as the class in marine invert zool. from Hopkins Marine Station was straggling along under Fisherman's Wharf here about 6:45 AM, one loon of this species swam by us at about 150 ft. Upon wading out toward it, I could see its small straight bill. Some indications of breeding plumage were evident on the back and in the pale ashy hind-neck; but rest of the plumage was typical "winter" type. It trailed one foot behind it in the water. July 15-16 what is apparently the same bird still present (trails July 20 1 foot) but now shows paler ash on head and darker back.
