Cogswell 1949 Journal 138 Dec.20 Tehachepi Pass, Kern Co., Calif. mtn. (where Koford had told me they roost) as we stopped along U.S. highway 466 to scan it. The town of Tehachepi itself was frozen in, with thin snow on ground. English Sparrows 2 1 Sparrow Hawk noted in town, 2 1 Loggerhead Shrike near monolith, 5 mi. to the east (with still some snow on ground, but bare ground by roadside). 1 ? Stopped here in Joshua tree area and took 15-20 min. walk to see what we could find. 2 Jack Rabbits started, 3 Ravens were chasing an adult Golden Eagle overhead. Collected some drawings of Yucca brevifolia leaves which appear to be the work of Jack Rabbits [see sp. acc't.] Dec.21- Santa Monica to Long Beach, Rico, & Pasadena, Los Angeles Co., Calif. Spent most of the day visiting friends. At Long Beach one new item in last 1 1/2 yrs. is a big dump felling in the "bird lagoon" on U.S. highway 101 by tho Alamitos Bay Bridge - where Knots & Rectoral Sandpipers as well as tousands of the commoner sp. used to be. At San Gabriel River Wildlife Sanctuary, 3 mi. N Rico, a pair of Acorn Woodpeckers have taken up quarters in the old walnut orchard at least 1 1/2 mi. from any oak woodland. They are storing walnuts acc't.
