Vermivora celata
Dec. 4 - Gray Lodge Refuge, S.W. Butte Co., Calif.
In the twigery at the base of a 20 ft.
willow tree along Butte Creek here.
I heard the characteristic sharp "chip"
mote of this species. Squeabing
brought it up for a close view by
me and by Ken Schulz, who was with
us. The bird was only moderately
yellow below, with definite but
fuzzy dusky olive streaks on the
breast; throat + chest more nearly
pure yellow. Another (?) bird was
heard almost immediately afterward
at some distance in the riparian
woodland, which here is perhaps
100 ft. deep, with trees not quite
giving a closed canopy.
[ I note only 1 good "winter" record
for the species in Pac. C. Avifauna 27 ]
