aphelocoma coerulescens 1.
May 7 San Joaquin Experimental Range, 1000' alt., SSW of
O'Neals, Madera Co., Calif. Several pairs in
vicinity of headquarters. A nest was
discovered in olive tree in courtyard of
building where most of the men in class
slept last night. The birds were quiet
gong coming -- until some of us climbed
the tree to inspect the nest and even
then their scolding was mild. The nest
was about 15 ft. up, in crotch of branches
1 to 3" thick, in rather open spot for
Jay's nest. It held 1 nestling in bursting
pinfeathers and (according to Bruce Brown)
2 eggs as well. Dr. Pitelka thinks the
2 sterile eggs a small clutch of 3 total
may be due to low fertility in 1st year
