Cogswell 1950 Journal 2 Jan. 27. Berkeley, Alameda Co., to Santa Monica, L.A. Co. Calif. - driving via San Jose & US Route 101, with no stops except for lunch & an afternoon snack. Total time enroute: 10 hrs. 20 min. We ate our lunch at Atascadero Lake 1 mi. S of Atascadero, S.L.O. Co., a small, muddy bordered artificial lake, with weedy fields & patches of dry cat-tails bordering it, & valley oak - live oak - Digges Pine woodland on the hillslopes. Birds seen during the 1/2 hr. we spent there were: Red-billed Grebe - 1 Great Blue Heron - 1 Baldpate - 4 Green-winged Teal - 19 Canvasback - 18,19 Bufflehead - 14 Ruddy Duck - 200+ Am. Merganser - 109 Coot - 500+ Killdeer - 2 Least Sandpiper - 4 * Mourning Dove - 200 * Belted Kingfisher - 1 Red-shafted Flicker - 6 Acorn Woodpecker - 5+ Scrub Jay - 1 Blue Tit Mouse - 3+ White-or. Nutthatch 1 heard Western Bluebird 5 Audubon's Warbler several West. Meadowlark - 10+ singing Purple Finch (in Rhamnus calif. bush) 18,19 House Finch - 1+ Brown Towhee - 2 White-crowned Sparrow - 150+ Golden " " 1+ Song Sparrow " 2 (*) = see species account An adult Golden Eagle was flying low over grassy hills along the highway 1 mi. N of the Santa Maria River. Several Turkey Vultures noted at various places, 150-200 White-throated Swifts from rocky portion of Savieta Pass, Santa Barbara Co. to the ocean shore (cliffs) nearby & several miles to the east, 1 Yellow-B. Maggie on S. side of Santa Ynez Valley S. of Buellton.
