Capella gallinago

Nov.27 - Jewell Lake, Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co. NE of
Berkeley, Calif. Two were feeding in the
open on a muddy point near old boat on
west shore. They were unaware or
unconcerned of our presence some 200
feet away on open N. end of lake.
Dec.5 One was probing in wider muddy area
at inlet (South) end of pond. It was
feeding thus in the open when we went
by on the E shore and still there when
we came back by some 20-30 min. later.
It was just as unconcerned as those on Nov.27.

Jan.30 - ΒΌ mi from Muir Beach, along Highway #1,
Marin Co., Calif. - A group of 15+ were
feeding in very wet pasture. They
sank their bills into the mud by
a series of short rapid thrusts --
as tho they had to work their way be-
tween the grass roots. The dark
bars on the flanks showed much
more conspicuously below the folded
wing than indicated in Peterson's
new "Eastern Guide".
