Cogswell 1949 Journal 136 Dec. 19 Berkeley, Alameda Co. to Bakersfield, Kern Co. via San Jose, Gilroy, Hollister (San Benito Co.), King City, Paso Robles, Shandon (San Luis Obispo Co.) > Lost Hills. Drove this route from 10:30 am. to after dark; obser-vations of animals only that incidental to the drives. The route thru San Benito Co. was new to me: S. of Gilroy are truck gardens & orchards for a few miles, then open grassy hills & sycamore-willow-live oak riparian woodland. At about 8 mi SE Hollister oak woodland begins on the NE facing slopes, but grassland continues on the opposite slopes for another 15 mi. with some patches of coastal sage brush on the steepest slopes with least soil. Beyond the San Benito River crossing (23 mi. from Hollister) blue (?) oak and Digger pine woodland extends on both sides of the road except for farmed areas in the valley. Adenostoma chaparral is visible here & there on higher, steeper slopes. The Pinnacles Nat'l Monument is just west of here, on the rolling country for 5 to 10 mi. SE of San Benito town, the woodland is sparser. Digger pine is replaced by Juniper bushes. Finally, upon crossing the divide into the Salinas R. drainage about 14 mi NE of King City, a broad belt of grassland is entered, with only bits of sagebrush. Roadrunner seen here [see fig. act]
