Cogswell 1948 Histronicus histronicus Dec. 18 Tomales Point, Marin Co., Calif. I and [illegible] were standing on rocks under the NE overhang of bluff at top of point & were under observation by others of group when I walked up to top of bluff above the ducks & caused them to swim away. For a few minutes* I had a wonderful view from directly above the male, as he swam into full sunlight — a truly beautiful bird. Females appear browner & much heavier than & bufflehead, altho not so much so as scoters. The white patch on side of forehead shows up fairly well at medium range.
