Dec. 19 Berkeley to Bakersfield, cont'd.
From Pass Robles east thru Shandon the
route was again new to me, but as it was al.
ready waning light I took no detailed note of
the vegetation or birds. Mourning Doves &
acorn woodpeckers were numerous E. of Pass
Robles; large flocks of Red-wings & Brewer's
Blackbirds in the ranch country near Shandon,
and finally, as we crossed the central valley
about 5 mi. E. of Lost Hills a flock of 20-25
ducks (sp.?) flew northward about on a line
between Goose, Tulare Lakes.
Dec. 20 N.C. of Bakersfield, Kern Co., Calif. - enroute to
Kern Memorial Park along the Kern River here
the road passes thru barren plateau land then
drops into broad gulch of the river. Saw
one Prairie Falcon flying along bluff at edge
of arroyo. There is still extensive cotton-
wood-willow riparian woodland along the
river for about 1 1/2 miles before the park
is reached, but the park itself is nearly
completely picknicked out -- tho a few
Ring-necked Ducks & lots of Coots were on the
ponds. Horned Larks were common &
singing in the scantily vegetated plateau,
all covered with white frost before the sun
hit it.
- Tehachapi Cr. & Tehachapi Pass area, Kern Co., Calif
Saw no Condors flying near snow-covered Bear
