Cogswell 1949 Journal 37 May 7 San Joaquin Experimental Range, alt. 1000', SSW of O'Neals Madera Co., Calif. (cont'd): Brown Towhee - 2 * Dark Sparrow - 2 (Headquarters area only, but probably also occurred elsewhere). The only species found only at Headquarters (Dark Spar- row) is not of such habitat requirements as to indi- cate restriction there. All other parts of the Range we visited are relatively uniform Blue Oak - Ponderosa pine woodland with varying amounts of Interior live oak (Q wislizeni) and Ceanothus cuneatus on the less exposed slopes and some aesculus in the larger draws, although the herb cover in the "natural area" was the most exten- sive of any we visited, and ground squirrels were least numerous there, I could distinguish no difference in the bird population on this casual visit. The absence of vireos & warblers & hummingbirds of any kind may be noteworthy at this season (vegetation drying out early for lack of spring rains). The patches of scattered Ceanothus cuneatus, Arctostaphylos mari- posse and sapling oaks, the latter especially in the natural area, should provide more habitat for ground & thicket birds I would think ! The weather was hot & dry, so we may have missed some of these species even if present. 3 Crotalus were killed by members of party today; one contained a small Citellus beechi which species was the most abundant mammal. Fresh work of Thomomys was seen in swales and 2 Sylvilagus seen early in A.M.
