Cogswell 1949 Journal 5 Jan.30 (cont.-p3)- Purple Finch - House Finch -- Pine Siskin - Spotted Towhee - Brown Towhee -- White-crowned Sparrow -- 50 +/- Golden-crowned Sparrow -- 100 +/- * Fox Sparrow - 5 Song Sparrow - 15+. Feb.5- Berkeley to Lafayette, Concord, a thru Marsh Creek Road to eastern foothills of Mt. Diablo range, Contra Costa County, Caly. one Lewis woodpecker [see sp. acc.] on a telephone pole along Lafayette - Martinez cut-off road about 2 1/2 mi. N o 1 mi. W of Walnut Creek. Mockingbirds were seen at 2 points along route 24 S.W. of Concord. area The Marsh Creek Road is excellent oak foothill country, with green grass now coming up on all the slopes. Mt. Diablo is still snow covered for about 800 ft. below the peak. We stopped at a junction of roads some 2 1/2 miles NE of the peak & watched 3 Golden eagles [see sp. account].
