1949 Cagwell June 26 Charadrius alexandrinus 1 1 ¾ mi. S. mouth of Salinas River, Monterey Co., Calif. On the landward side of the dunes separating an [illegible] lagoon from the ocean here, there is an area about 200 x 300 ft. which is flatter than most of the dunes & relatively harder packed (see) sand, with the hummocks covered with beach grasses and/or [illegible]. A pair of birds of this species centered their activities in about a 100 x 150 ft. portion of this area, including a short stretch of [crossed out] muddy shore of the lagoon. After watching the adults fly & return to the same section several times, we finally spotted 1 downy young high-tailing it away from us. The ads. followed; but when we did also, the young was nowhere to be found. The ? bird had definitely blacker head & breast markings than the ? [sexes assumed thereby] altho not noticeably so at a distance. Both adults gave an occasional low, muffled "brt" or "guit" call note as they flew over or near us. [This apparently corresponds to the "krrr" reported by Hoffman, 1927] - Mouth of Salinas River, Monterey Co., Calif. 1 adult flushed by 2 dogs from sandy shore of river, here a brackish lagoon blocked off from ocean by dune sand-bar. It gave a in slightly different, doubled note, perhaps = fly to Hoffmans "too-teet".
