Cogswell
1948
Asyndesmus Lewisii
Oct. 16 - 1 mi. S. of Oakville, Napa Co., Calif.
an immature watched for several
minutes as it flew out after passing insects
several times from the top of a telephone pole.
The location was a mixture of oaks, orchard
trees, and grassland. This is the first I have
ever seen in this plumage: bronzy black
upperparts as in adult but with no
gray nuchal collar and no red on face.
The underparts were grayish, slightly tinged
with pink.
1949
Feb. 9 - 2 ½ mi. N & 1 mi. W of Walnut Creek, Contra Costa
Co., Calif. - 1 on telephone pole along roadside,
a few scattered oaks are in the vicinity,
many new houses. This bird shows a
prominently light gray upper breast con-
trasting with (but not abruptly demarcated)
rosy belly.
