Cogswell 1948 Zenaidura macroura Nov.7 - 4 mi. W.S.W. of Palo Alto, San Mateo Co., Calif. A flock of 6 flushed from ground on dry grassy gentle hill slope with scattered oak trees -- not unlike area in which they winter commonly in East Pasadena, Los Angeles County, Calif. There was seen a sprinkling of turkey mulein plants here too, which is one of their favorite foods according to Jepson. (Eriocarpus setigerus p. 395, "Manual of Flowering Plants of Calif.") Dec.21 - State Elk Preserve, just N.W. of Tupman, Kern Co., Calif. 5 perched in dead willow tree at edge of canal where elk were grazing. These are the first we have seen anywhere since leaving Berkeley & coming here via Melroy, Los BaƱos & down the W. side of the valley. 1949 Mar.20 - Gray Lodge Refuge, S.W. Butte Co., Calif. about 20 seen, in groups of 2 to 6, all flushed from roadways near Headquarters area or flying over. Cooking was regular at 6:00 A.M. when I got up & continued until some time after sunrise -- but was heard only a few times during rest of A.M. 1950 Jan.27 - Atascadero Lake, Atascadero, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. about 200 flushed from weedy roadside brush facing the sun. They fled in series up to nearby oak trees.
