Phasianus colchicus
Dec. 21 - 3 mi. E., 1½ mi. S of Port Hueneme, Ventura Co.,
Calif. - cock heard crowing once, though
it was an odd crow: instead of the usual
I notes there were at least 4 or 5, but
still of the normal full-voice quality.
The call came from a wide field with tall
weeds & a few scattered willow trees along
lowland ditch about 1 mi. from the ocean.
1949
Mar.20 - Gray Lodge Refuge, S.V. Butte Co., Calif. - of the total
number seen here today (est. at 500) over half were
flushed from the tall weeds of fields SE and E
of refuge headquarters as about 18 of us engaged in
a "drive" to flush all birds there in order to
check for tagged 44 which were let out here a few
days ago. I was surprised to see that after being
driven some distance on the ground, & perhaps
flushed once or twice, several took high flights
about 50' up & well over all the drivers'
heads. Some of the single flights observed were
easily over 1/3 mile long.
