Puffinus griseus

July 17 - Pt. Cypress and Pescadero Pt. (W. and S. sides
of Monterey Peninsula), Monterey Co., Calif.
Estimated 300, 500 respectively - all
passing along at usual distance &
headed northward around the penin-
sula. The time is late AM (11:00-12:00)
altho too far out for identification of most
of them, the few close in were this species
and most of them probably were also.
Pt. Lobos, Monterey Co., Calif. Estimated
500 or more seen - the general flight
line here at 2:00 PM is still north-
ward, but off the top of the peninsula
there was quite a bit of circling around.
- off mouth of Malpaso Cr. S. of Carmel Highlands
Monterey Co., Calif. - 1000+ seen between
5:15 & 5:45 PM. - Most of these were
flying southward [!!! - cf. above] at
a distance offshore about twice that
of the main flight of the Brandells
cormorants. [species again assumed to
be this; the manner of flight being
exactly that described above for Pt. Pinos]
Some 200 or so were bobbing on the waves
major flock at about the same distance offshore, but
the flying birds passed on without
joining them.
July 20 - Monterey Harbor to point on ocean about
9-10 mi. W. Pt. Joe, Monterey Co., Calif., return
Leaving the harbor at 1:06 P.M. & out along
the S. side of the bay to past Pt. Pinos
no shearwaters were seen. About 1 mi.
