Banks 1960 Journal 13. June 13 Sand Flat, 6800 ft., Mt. Shasta, Siskiyou Co., Calif. - Got up early to hike the 3 miles to Panther Meadow. First checked the traps. Had taken 1 Bronzos out last night, within 1 hr. after setting. Now had one more in the tent, where I had a trap guarding supplies. Left traps set. About 7 ami., the dirt road meets the black-top road to the ski bowl. I followed this, finally found Panther Meadow. It is on that main road, about a mile below the ski bowl, & I had passed it Sat. evening. The only sign is 100 yds. from the road, facing away! It is not much of a meadow - just a flat. Panther Creek starts there, from meltwater. And it is still under 3 ft. of snow. The topo sheet is wrong regarding the position of Sand Flat and the road. Returned to camp through the forest. Didn't see much. Had a chipmunk in my traps. Shot a Carpodacus and an Evening Grosbeak in camp. In p.m., walked over the ridge just across the road (W). There is another large sand flat, completely barren. There is some large Arctostaphylos at one end, by the edge. The forest all around here is mostly Red Fir, very tall trees. Some has been logged recently, but relatively little, & nothing close to camp. There are frequent openings, with low Arctostaphylos or no cover. Soil is all sandy or rocky. Lots of fallen trees and dead snags. There is nothing moving at night - no owls, bats, or nighthawks - it gets pretty cold. Lots of vole markings in the flat, but nothing that looks like gophers. Began to break camp, will leave in the morning. I am convinced that

Barks Journal 19. June 18 Elkh Lake, 4900 ft, Deschutes Co., Oregon — hunted this morning around the edges of Sparks Lake, 4520 ft., and the meadows there. Saw very little and collected only a Tree Swallow. In the afternoon, I walked to a place called Island Meadows, due N of Elkh Lake about 2 1/2 miles. There is a trail starting opposite the road to the lodge. The trail is hard to follow, since stretches of it are covered with snow, drifts hip-high. I lost the trail finally, and went the last third or so of a mile by following the sound of a chorus of Birds. The meadow was instead a lake at the moment, with water 3 or 4 ft. deep over it, and extending into the woods around. Got lost again on the return trip. Round trip took 3 1/2 hrs., but if trail were clear all the way, probably a 2-2 1/2 hr. trip. Very little bird life in the forest. Saw only Chickadees, Nuttall’s Wrens, Siskins, and Hermit Thrush. Big for the most bird activity is right in camp. In late afternoon it began to cloud up fast, got cool & windy. Now it's completely overcast. Relocated my traps in the little marsh. Some were sprung and killed during today. I suspect Golden Mantled Ground Squirrel. June 19 Wire Meadow, 4 1/2 mi’s, 1 1/2 mi. E Elkh Lake, Deschutes Co., Ore. Hunted completely around the edge of this meadow, now under about 4” of water, without seeing much of note. The very lush meadow is adjacent to Big Lava Lake, and part of it may be always marshy. Saw Red Crossbills, but a car scared them before I could get a shot.

Banks 1960 2. capensis captive 1. Aug. 3 Strawberry Canyon, Berkeley 3pm the leaf litter which had been pet shortly after 1pm had been disturbed. WT, 3.3gm. Down ca. & inch on back, humerus, forearm, crown, occiput, and entire leg join body. The bird gaped twice while I was holding it for weighing and examination, but not when I put it back into nest and tried to feed it. It resumed the egg position, with head laid under body. I put in a pan of leaf litter and as soon as I was (10ydo from cage) in position to watch, could see one bird scratching in it. It did not go to the nest. At 3:26, I went to hanging feeder, and saw seen to be holding something in her mouth. She flew to the next brush-pile, but did not go to nest. For over 1 min she sat (again) on feeder, nearest, flicking tail nervously, crown feathers semi-erect. Flew away. Back to feeder, same action, flew to brush but worked down to ground. 3:25, both birds in brush, one holding insect (?) in mouth. 3:26, short, one bird in view, suddenly other came from nest area to it, both to ground. 3:29 both birds at nest, one feeding young or at least put head in nest. Both flew away. 3:31 One bird scratching in leaf litter. Both hopped from ground to branches, one rubbed its bill on branch. At least one resumed foraging in litter. 3:38 Diver for several min. Both flew from top of cage to branches, one visited brush pile briefly. 3:40 One flew to logs pecked at mash. 3:47 I left for 5mi. 3:52 took new position 10yds. farther away, could see less of cage. Until 3:57, saw activity only once.

Barks 1960 2. Aug 3, Stranberry Canyon, Bakers at 3:57, one bird, first seen in brush pile, worked up to nest. 4:00 one at nest and the other apparently on it. The former poked its head in several times; I could hardly see the back of the other. First we left, there was one still stayed there. 4:11 Dog walked past cage, but no activity from birds. Between 4:20 & 4:25, 8 cars & truck went by, but no disturbance. 4:27 Bird flew down from top of cage or screen, and the other left the nest. The latter flew to box of mash, then to ground and began to scratch litter. 4:31 Both at in brush, at bottom. 4:33 & in brush, worked up, gleaning from brush twice. 4:35 & to brush, to nest, appeared to feed & then settle on nest. Leaving about 1 min. At least 1 scratched until 4:40, without visiting nest. at 4:45 I put in more litter; & foraged it at once. I was picking from screen over nest, at 4:50, one visited nest. Lost track, at 5:05, & brooding, sat till 2 almost near nest. Egg not hatched. (Hatch by 7pm).
