Barby 1954 Thamnophis 3, June 25 4mi S Ladysmith, Vancouver Island, B.C. Got one snake in a cut-burned area bee. Saw one other disappear. Looks like good snake country, but haven't seen many. June 26 2 1/2 mi N Parksville, Vancouver Island, B.C. # 630 was obtained in a field of weeds, grass, + thistles, little high brush and few logs. It flattened its head and neck and struck at me fiercely, opened its mouth widely June 27 11 1/2 mi. W Parksville, Vancouver Island, B.C. - Saw a garter snake last night, caught one (635) this morning, in Braden, in a built-up area in a swampy place. Braden is the main plant, with grass + a shrub (?) growing in the water nearby. This snake has a light day above belly, whereas those obtained yesterday are dark below. June 28 Kye Bay, Cormos, Vancouver Island, B.C. - Caught another of the lighter snakes in this pasture type area, about 150+ft, deep (guess). It was perfectly quiet as I walked over it, and I nearly missed it. It did not move until I turned and went back for it. It is 641. June 29 Oyster River, Vancouver Island, B.C. - Caught 2 snakes in grassy field on N side of river, 1/2 mi. from highway. 646 is light black, 653 is small & light, very dechred. Saw but missed 2 others.
