June 9 Coyote Peak, 3000+ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. - The fog
turned to mist and the mist turned to rain. All vegetation was dripping wet this a.m. The
dawn seemed like a good omen, and it threatened
to be a good day. I started out collecting, but
it soon started to rain. So I packed up and
left. Went out to Rt. 101. This is a better approach
to this area - part of the road is paved, sort of. The
junction at Rt 101 is not marked, and after a bit
it doesn't look like much, but it gets better until
entering the bald area. New birds today were
Band-tailed Pigeon, Flycatcher, and some sort of
Swallow.
Saw Barn Swallow on way out.

Here at a new area. Arrived about 2 p.m. Am
camped on the Jepson ranch-dairy. There is
an old road that once led to a ferry, but
now is not used. My tent is right in the
middle of it, under a Redwood. It's very
shady + cool, out of the wind, not too many
bugs. The place is a paradise for birds. Took a
walk after supper (put up this morning's birds in
the pm.) and saw: Russet-backed Thrush - very
abundant, singing everywhere, Robin, Black-
headed Grosbeak, Amer Goldfinch, Western Flycatcher,
Morning Dove, Song Sparrow, Barn Owl, Horned
Owl (see account) Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Turkey
