Banks 1959 Thamnophis May 1 2.2 mi NW Bolinas, 300+ft., Marin Co., Calif. - Caught one small garter snake near a stream here. A short time later (about 4 p.m.) saw another near the road, but it got away. It was quite large. Caught another fair sized one in some place a few minutes later. In about an hour, found one crossing the road about 1/2 mile nearer Bolinas (this is Mesa Rd., or County Rd.) in a low wet area. These are RCB 417, 418, 419. The intermediate sized one of the 3 is the one from the wet, lower area. May 9 2 mi S Westport, sea level, Mendocino Co., Calif. Picked up a snake - real visions - on the road here. 2 mi N mouth of Ten Mile River, sea level, Mendocino Co., Cal. Another, D.O.R. In formalin as RCB 422. Mouth, Ten Mile River, sea level, Mendocino Co., Calif. Got two along the road leading to the Fosteri home. June 9 3.1 mi N, 1/2 mi W Fort Dick, sea level, Del Norte Co., Calif. - This point, measured from the crossroad at Ft. Dick, marks a bend in a now unused road on the Jepson Ranch. Right at this corner there is a large concentration of garter snakes. They are big, very fast - some jumping from a small latch to seek cover in the brush.
