Banks 1959 Journal 26 June 25 Judicum Falls Provincial Park, Vancouver Is., B.C. The location of the dot for this park on the map is misleading. It is not on the coast, near Judicum but is on the Little Judicum River, about [illegible] road mi. W of Parksville on Alberni Highway. It is a beautiful area. The hills are all evergreen-covered, and on the road to here one can see snow-capped mountains. The camp is in conifer forest. My site is in fir and incense cedar, trees 3 to 6 in. DBH, about 75 ft. tall, a few larger trees. This type forest extends on all sides. The only sounds are a stream, wind in the trees, an Olive-backed thrush, and my crackling campfire. Very few birds so far. Took a short walk about dark (10 p.m.), saw a Nighthawk, watched him diving and looning. June 26 Woke up to cloudy skies and a shower, but it didn't last long. Left camp and drove to the E west of the island, to Parksville and north # toward Judicum. This area is wooded, much as described for the more southern coast. There are many motels, resorts, etc., between the road (mt. 19) and the coast. About the only openings are around houses, or logged areas which have very thick brush. French Creek is between Parksville and Judicum. Collected in 2 places, only got 3 birds. (ten)
