June 27 Qualicum Falls Provincial Park, Vancouver Island, B.C.
But everytime I stopped it began to rain.
After supper visited a place about 3 mi.
W of the park but didn't collect.
June 28 Left this area about 10:30 a.m.
Kye Bay, Comox, Vancouver Island, B.C. - Arrived
in Comox just at noon. In general touring
around, followed the Kye Bay Road clear
to the Bay which is down a hill perhaps
200 ft. elev. Returned to top of hill and
heard White-crowns sing. Asked at a home
close by about property ownership. The
area where birds were singing is Air
Force, and there is an airstrip there.
Wooded area at top of hill belongs to James
Simon (American)
ornithologist, very interested
in birds. Talked to him at length, over an
hour. He is a surveyor, a man about 45, and
he tried to direct me to suitable collecting places.
He knows several Lars in Comox, gave me
directions to their places. He also directed me
to the farm of people named Knight where I
collected. This farm adjoins the Air Force land,
and is across the road from Simon's. The
Knight farm (ca. 70 acres) is mostly weedy
field, some growing up to Aspen, used for
pasture - very little cultivation. It is ideal
White-crown habitat, but birds are scarce. Got 4
