Sunset Beach State Park, Coos Co., Oregon.
June 13 There seem to be some shooting areas not too
far away, although the best are in the park.
While trying to find a spot this afternoon,
drove on north of North Bend. The area
is all sand/dune or forest. I had hoped
the sand would be covered with brush,
but it is apparently barren, except for
scattered trees. For a long stretch there
were no White-crowns. That area is also
inaccessible by car. I am now on the
Empire 15 min. quad. of the tops of Empire.
Birds here in the park are: Olive-backed
Thrush, Bewick Wren, White-crowned Sparrow,
Robin, Song Sparrow. I can see what
appear to be Osprey nests in a couple of
tall dead trees.
June 14 It was raining when I woke up, so I slept
in a while. But into the field about 8, and it
started to rain again very shortly. Went back
to camp, and did odd jobs for a bit. Now, at 9:45,
it has cleared a little, but it looks like more
rain. I am very unimpressed with this area,
as far as White-crowned Sparrow habitat. Outside
the park it is clear-cut forest, with a hard
chegonal of blueberries, etc., forming a 3-4 ft.
Thick cover, with very few openings. From
what I have seen, the whole Coos Bay area is
