Barbo 1959 Journal 15. Sunset Beach State Park, Coos Co., Oregon. June 13 There seem to be some shooting areas not too far away, although the best are in the park. While trying to find a spot this afternoon, drove on north of North Bend. The area is all sand/dune or forest. I had hoped the sand would be covered with brush, but it is apparently barren, except for scattered trees. For a long stretch there were no White-crowns. That area is also inaccessible by car. I am now on the Empire 15 min. quad. of the tops of Empire. Birds here in the park are: Olive-backed Thrush, Bewick Wren, White-crowned Sparrow, Robin, Song Sparrow. I can see what appear to be Osprey nests in a couple of tall dead trees. June 14 It was raining when I woke up, so I slept in a while. But into the field about 8, and it started to rain again very shortly. Went back to camp, and did odd jobs for a bit. Now, at 9:45, it has cleared a little, but it looks like more rain. I am very unimpressed with this area, as far as White-crowned Sparrow habitat. Outside the park it is clear-cut forest, with a hard chegonal of blueberries, etc., forming a 3-4 ft. Thick cover, with very few openings. From what I have seen, the whole Coos Bay area is
