Sphyrapicus thyroides Aug. 6 Mosquitolahe, s000 ft., 2 mi W Lookout Peak, Alpine C, Calif. Shot 2 birds, ♂ in morning, ♀ in mid afternoon. Both molt ing heavily. ♂, 352, had almost indis- cernable testes (had been frozen), and the skull was completely single layered. The ♀, 353, was mushy inside; the skull was double layered on the rear 1/3 or so. The ♀ leached thru the head, + lost many feathers when washed.
