Banks 1954 Journal 38 July 4 Harts Pass, Oregon & Wash. 6200+ft. Clean & bright, a few clouds in N & NW, and very little wind this morning. A really beautiful day. Packed up my gear and left about 9:30 a.m. Drove to just below Bend, Oregon, by midnight or so. In the valley as soon as I had descended from Harts Pass, I saw Lewis Woodpecker and Magpie, both of which I saw frequently on south, the woodpecker very common. Stopped at Chelan, Chelan Co. Wash., for ice. The ice plant here is run by Joseph Pisani, who also does taxidermy work. He used to work for Calif. Academy at San Francisco. He gave me a wildcat which had been killed on the road the previous night. I gutted it thought it back. July 5 Drove from S of Bend, Oregon, to Berkeley. Stopped at Winter Lake, which was clouded. Just south of these saw Wilson Snipe sitting on a post. At Upper Klamath Lake, Oregon, north of Klamath Falls, saw California Gull and White Pelican, plus ducks which I did not stop to identify. After 12hr drive, got to Berkeley about 7 p.m.
