Carpodacus cassinii
July 10 Kaiser Pass Meadow, 9100 ft, Fresno Co., Calif.
These birds are very abundant in the pines
surrounding the meadow, and in fact all
over the area, probably the most abundant
species. There appear to be many young
birds flying about. One bird, at least, was
giving a two-parted note, "chir-up", very
"horse Finch like" [sic], but also sounding like
a slightly hoarse Vires solitarius. Collected
this bird and tried to put it up as MB 697, but
it was in too bad shape. The head needed
washed, + all neck+ face feathers came out in
the process. It was a S, with bright reds
on the crown, weighed 27.6 gm., had tarsi
74 mm. and no cloacal protuberance.
