Zonotrichia leucophrys
May 24 Middle Mt. G., Boost, Univ. & Dr. S. Trudeau, Placer Co. Calif.
along the Willow + Ape bordered stream; the
pair were in willow, but one flew off its
sage. No specimens were obtained. There seem
to be very few birds along here.
June 4 Univ. Calif. Campus, Berkeley Alameda Co. Calif. - a
pair of birds here, Dan Wilhoff shot a
singing bird from a small pine tree with
his slingshot - corner Oxford + Lute sts. DUB 469.
June 7 Weatt, 150 ft. E Humboldt Co. Calif. - As I
stopped in this little town (150 pop.) for a
coffee stop, thought I heard a White-oven
ring. Heard the song twice, but although
of the pattern it sounded coarse. A little
later, heard it again about 100 yds. from
the first spot - modest, it is all White-oven.
The song is -- with the buzz
on the end, typical of the Sanville River birds.
The area here is a small valley, surrounded
by redwood covered hills. It gives the
impression of a civilized mountain meadow
(much grass, weeds) but with little or no [3y Fork]
water apparent. Birds singing (only one,
& Pair]
as near as I can tell) at 1:30 p.m., P.D.T.
Right in town, so no opportunity to collect.
A very unusual + remarkable occurrence.
This is 23 mi. East from the coast, opp.
the Cape Mendocino area.
