Banks 1960 Journal 6 Mar. Pacific Grove - Carmel, seal level, Monterey Co., Calif. - Along the 17 mile drive in mid-late afternoon. Near Pt. Joe spotted a Western Grebe floating in a tide pool. Neck was bad, but saved the skull. Saw many birds along the early part of the drive as far as Seal Rocks. A few on the following list (*) seen at picnic grove in Pacific Grove. Scrib Jay*, Chestnut-Backed Chickadee*, California Woodpecker*, Red-tailed Grebe, Surf Scoter, Cormorant (carrying sea weed - nesting?), Guillemot, Western Gull, Western Grebe, Brewer Blackbird, Redwing Sparrow Hawk, White-crowned sparrow, Horned Grebe, Black Turnstone, Spotted Sand piper & Goldeneye. Also saw many seals and one, perhaps 2, Sea Otter, the latter near Pt. Joe. 25 Mar. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif. Set traps for mice for zoo. 113. In fields beyond Poultry Husbandry, caught 8 Reithrodontomy's megalotis, 7 Murinus californicus (both including pregnant ♀♀). Saw 4 deer. In pines, lost 2 traps to wood rat. In woods, near stream, set 1 Peromyscus californicus and 2 P. truei. Also 1 Hermit Thrush. 26 Mar. Today had 9 Reithrodontomy's, 1 Murinus, 3 Fox Sparrow, (War-tit.) Had moved the traps a little, not much.
