Oyster River, Vancouver Island, B.C.
Probably a hundred acres, is mainly grass,
quite tall, with a few patches of small trees,
a scattering of stumps and logs. On the
surface, it appears to be good White-crow
habitat, but the birds are scarce. I got only
4, saw only 3 pr., and I covered a good bit
of the area. It seems that Chipping Sparrows
occupy the Zonotrichia [illegible] (habitat, at least).
here. Took 1 chippy, 2 garter snakes, and 6
Quercus [illegible] here. Western Meadowlarks abound
the first seen, in abundance, on the island.
Also I saw or heard:
Yellow Warbler
Western Flycatcher Violet-green Swallow
Amer. Goldfinch Barn Swallow
Alder Flycatcher Ring-necked Pheasant,
Robin Band-tailed Pigeon
Thrasher Olive-backed Thrush
Sylvian Vireo Orange-crowned Warbler.
Saw also 2 deer, a doe and a spike-buck,
feeding in the grass.
Macaulay Rd., 14 mi. N Courtenay, Vancouver Isld., B.C.
Met Mr. Pease at the junction of this road
and the highway, a few 10ths of a mile S of the
park entrance, at 10:30. Drove about 5 miles,
and the country opened up into some good farms.
A Wm. Johnson (sp?) who runs a farm gave
permission to shoot here. Took 3 White-crows,
