Benks 1961 Alleno Calypso anna Contra Costa Mar. 28 El Cerrito, Alameda Co., Calif. - Mrs. Erin M. Johnson called into MVZ this morning, and reported an allino hummingbird. At 3 p.m., Don Medina and I went here to try to collect it. Mrs. Johnson's address is 8014 Terrace in El Cerrito. She took me to the area where she had seen the bird twice before, across the street and down the slope from her house, on a trail toward Huber Park. After a short wait, we saw the bird. The plumage was white, with a rosy suffusion on the throat. Bill dark. Its actions were no different from another hummer's. Maple, live oak, + ?Broom, as well as a purple-zipped plant, were in bloom, and both Anna and Allen hummers were present. The allino and another bummer at one time ascended vertically about 4 ft. above the vegetation, hill-to-hill, very close. Very soon there was a chase, and they both flew away, the normal kind in pursuit of the allino. About 45 min. later the allino was back, perched in a maple tree. Don shot, it flew away. We walked a short ways into the nearby field, + saw this allino being chased by another bird in a sweepy circle, rather high. While writing, I have seen 2 ?, probably 2 ? Anna, no Allen - they (Allen) may not have been present earlier. a. 10:15 a.m. Mar. 29 Saw the allino again in same area. There are Rufus Hummingbirds here also, and one of them chased the allino. Allino reappeared 11:15, was immediately
