Banks 1959 Journal 23. June 21 Twin Barlors State Lab, Brays Hall Co, Wash. where the Kniglet, Vire, V.C. Sparrow, White-backed Thrush + Crow all can be heard. Spent most of the afternoon setting up camp and putting up my birds. Now can hear a Whipthrash. June 22 The day started overcast, but soon cleared up. Hunted from 8-11am, good luck the first 2 hours, poor the last. Got 5 birds. Put them up in the afternoon. There was a cool NW breeze blowing most of today, as there was yesterday. Only new bird today is Flicker. Now, about 5:30pm, it is overcast again. Did more exploring in the evening, nearly going further on the roads I'd lean on. There is little good area that is shootable. Stopped at 2mi S, 3 mi E Westport, Sealend, Brays Hall Co, Wash. where I got one White-crowned Sparrow. A little ways east on the road there is a side road with a sign saying "State Land". I walked back (the road is blocked) about 1/2 mi. The area is cut and very brushy, but there is an old railroad bed, apparently, that gives access deep into it. Think I heard a Puffed Grouse drumming. Shot a Whipthrash. Whited for owl here + in a small stand of redwoods, but must have been too early.
