June 11 Hat Creek Valley, Shasta C. Calfi - of W.B. Smith,
elev. 3560 ft. Along the creek were large growths of
alder, willow, + cottonwood. Nice looking area, but no
Zonotrichia. Mrs. Smith is a sort of bird watcher, +
I talked to her. She sees White-crowned n warbler.
Here I saw Crow, Brewer Blackbird, Say Sparrow,
Yellow Warble, Western Meadowlark, Robin, Western
Bluebird, Warbling Vireo, + Amer. Goldfinch. There
was an oryzel (dipper) nest over the stream, right
in their yard. Drove on to McCland, + Mt. Shasta
city, then up to the ski bowl. Finally found the
road to Sand Flat + Panther Meadow. Road is
blocked by down trees at Sand Flat, where I
made camp at 8:30. Set 5 mouse traps.
June 12 Sand Flat, 6800 ft., Mt. Shasta, Siskiyou Co., Calf.
Am just on edge of Shasta quad, USGS, 1954.
Am on SW slope of Mt. Shasta. Had 3 Brompes
in my traps this morning. Mosquitos + flies are
bad. But a late start this morning, since I had
to finish setting up camp. Went out in the woods
early. About 9 all was quiet - I sat on a log and
sang pyzing owl calls. Soon Mt. Chickadees, Red-
breasted Vth Hatch, Western Tanager, B.Creeper, Andulua
Warble, and Campodacus sp. were in the trees near me.
Also junco. Didn't get a lot done today. The forest here
is fairly open, very tall trees - 100 ft. Many of the birds
stay high in the tops of them. Giving Proud calls is the
best way to get them, + then only a few species come.
