July 8 Kaiser pass area, Fresno Co., Calif. -
Left Berkeley at 8:30 am. Drove Rt.99 to Madera,
than at east to hit Rt.168 to this area. Reached
the summit of the pass about 3 p.m. The last
10 miles or so of this road, past Huntington Lake,
is very narrow and steep. The area impresses
me as very hot and dry, with a thin pine
forest which does not extend onto some hillsides
because of the rock. Although the pass is 9175
ft. (acc. to topo & forest service maps) it is hot! No
snow - people say there was very little this
winter. Drove on past the pass to
Jarbars Meadow, 7300 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. -
which is by Florence Lake, the end of the road.
This side of the pass is much
rockier, with huge granite outcrops and
less trees. The road is passable but not tops.
Shot 4 Sycophorus by the meadow. Got the
following kind list here:
Western Wood Pewee
Mountain Chickadee
Oregon Junco
Violet Green Swallow
Robin
Steller Jay
Redwing
Cowbird (1)
Brown Blackbird
W. Meadowlark (young?)
Song Sparrow
Also saw ground squirrels, (C. beechyi?),
Chipmunk, and some young rabbit.
Drove back to the pass - it is a four's drive.
