Haute Pass, 6197 ft. Chelan Co., Wash.
The campground is about under 2 ft. of snow.
Found a small clear area where I could set
up camp, can't fire stove, I hope. It's clouding
up now, may rain. Saw deer on the way
up, there is a chipmunk at my camp. Not
much bird life seen yet - Canada Jay,
and a few sounds I haven't identified yet.
There is a strong breeze from the west. 7:45
After unting the stove, took a walk toward
Slate Peak. Saw a Chickaree in camp, saw
a Robin, found its nest about 12 ft. up in a
small fir. Several times heard Savannah
Sparrow sing, but got only glimpses. Collected
a fox sparrow. Chipping Sparrow + Vermit
Thrush also sent heard. I got high enough to
get into the clouds - it was misting, came back
to camp, where it misted till I went to
bed. But to 6500 or 6800 ft., I guess.
July 2
Very windy & cold, cloudy this morning, but
shows signs of clearing. A few minutes after 2
get-up, a pair of Canada Jay and a Ruby-cra,
Knight came thru camp, the knight with
crest erect & scolding the silent jays.
Oregon Junco here in camp also. My hands
are so cold I can hardly write. Collected
from about 9 to near noon. Walked up the road
toward Slate Peak, then went off road to the
