6.
June 7 Broke camp at Lewis Meadow about 4. Drove to edge of Willow Creek Valley, then toward Winner's Upper Meadow. Several needons along that road, but all heavily grazed and no brush. Collected 2 Sceloporus graciosa on that road. Am now at the unoccupied (at present) Fire Control Sta., about 2 mi E of Lewis Meadow, and about 1 mi N, 2 1/2 mi E Mahogany Peak.
Same map. Elev. about 5080 ft. Late in p.m.
It looked like a big storm coming, + I came here to have benefit of punch if it raised, but storm has passed on east, to the NE of me. Birds very quiet all afternoon, however.
June 8 Got up shortly after 6, sun already high. Heard Horned Owls just before dawn, coyotes during the night. Worked the pine forest for 1 1/2 hr, got 3 Empidonax, 1 Audubon Warbler. Trees here are small, 15-20ft., an occasional larger one. Forest is much thicker than at Lewis Meadow; logging was much longer ago. There are signs of fire, but very old. Ground cover is sagebrush + mullen + grassloaf?, all low, very easy to get around. Empidonax much more common than above, Woodpeckers less so. Saw tracks here last night, Sceloporus graciosus this morning. Saw Gray Squirrel, Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel, + the other ground squirrel. List of birds seen in the lowland localities yesterday + today on next page.
