July 9 Kaiser Pass Meadow, 9100 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. -
Collected 11 White-crows and a Pine Grosbeak.
also saw a mouse (briefly), Chickadee, and
heard & saw movings of Ground Squirrels.
Back to camp, shined till dark.
July 10 Arrived here about 7. Poor hunting today,
Got 7 White-crows, a Ground Squirrel (zp?)
and a Cassin Finch. Added birds: Red-
breasted Mithatch (?) and Vilhaison Sapsuckers
These are Hummingbirds but just whiz by.
Saw mice movng thru grass a couple
tries. Appear to be Microtus.
8mi, 5 Kaiser Pass, 8500 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. -
Shined until about 5:30, then wrote notes.
Flies are very bad here in camp, few
mosquitoes. Mosquitoes at the meadow are
nearly unbearable - never seen or been bitten
by so many. No birds here in camp that
aren't above, but I haven't had much chance
to look around. There is a large nest in
a tree close by, but have not seen anything
around it. Went walking about dusk to see
if I could get anything. Saw some Lates, but
couldn't set one.
July 11 Up at 5 a.m., started out at 6. Only got 3 White -
crows. Wanded about a good deal, on the E
side of the road, up to perhaps 9000 ft. Saw deer.
