Oct. 22 Espiritu Santo Island, S end, Baja Calif., Mexico.
The murky time of day. We walked up the plain to
the ridge, turned left down the draw toward
the beach. Reached the water of this little bay,
which was lined on both sides with mangroves.
The S side of this valley was extremely rocky and
rough walking. I worked down nearly to the beach,
then turned S, up the hill. On the top saw more
birds than any previous stop. The side of this valley
has several "caves", overhanging ledges, which I
searched for lizards. Walked back over the ridge to the
beach. Bob had seen the boat which was supposed
to meet us—it was broken down. We got a fisherman
to row us to it. Here we were anchored by a
cliff, which showed well the nature of the island.
It was alternate layers of sandstone & conglomerate,
the latter with quite large inclusions. The caves
mentioned earlier were caused by the softer parts
of the sandstone eroding out. Arrived back in
La Paz about 7:30 pm. After dark the clouds left, and
we could see the stars. We found out that the
hurricane is in the Gulf, heading due N. This pretty
well cancels any trip to Cerralvo, at least for 2 days.
Birds seen on Espiritu Santo: Osprey, Red-Tailed Hawk,
Mockingbird, Rock Wren, Blue-gray Grackle,
Black-throated Sparrow, Verdin, Ground Dove,
