Banks 1960 Zonotrichia leucophrys 2. Mar 26-27 Berkeley, Alameda Co. Calif. A third bird, started as 724, lost so many back feathers before I stated that I quit. It was a ?, tes. 3+2 mm. It was as fat or fatter than 723, in molt, feathers in sheath on entire head (frontal, coronal, occipitals superior regions - not auricular or cheeks) throat, and all central rectrices in sheath but apparently full grown. Wt. 31.9 gm. (3) Ad. Fourth bird, started as 725, not finished, weight 31.4 gm., was similarly fat. Molt on head - all major regions including cheeks (below eye, below bill - below lore), also on dorsal cervical region, throat + apples, abdominal regions. A little molt on lower back (rump?), central rectrices apparently not replaced, but can't be sure. 8th + 9th secondary in sheath, 9th smaller on right wing. On left, both these are % sheath, but 7th 65C has sheath. On previous bird, no cheek shows no sheaths in secondary region, apparently fresh feathers. This bird (ie, 725) is a ?, ova small. Next two birds collected 27 March. The first of these has a crown - mostly brown - 1st year. Most feathers in sheath - even feathers coming in are brown! All head and facial tracts are in sheath. Molt extends down entire dorsal tract to oil gland, but is less extensive on back than on crown. -- or one nearly completed, (4) Ad. (5) 13.
